Compare optical and digital refractometers by the sample you test and the result you need. Food, beverage, seawater, honey and specialist measurements use different scales; a shared instrument name does not make them interchangeable.

Match the scale to the sample

Sample or task Check the scale Compare models
Fruit juice and beverage samples Brix range and sample suitability; mixed dissolved solids can affect the reading 0–35 Brix digital model; 0–53 digital model; INS-BM0101, 0–55% Brix
Honey Honey moisture or high-range Brix, with the sample conditions documented for that scale Honey refractometer; multiscale honey model
Salt solutions and seawater checks Confirm the salt or seawater scale, units, resolution and reference-check method for your sample Compare salinity meters by the required scale
Brewing and wine samples Brix, wort or other documented scale; potential alcohol is not automatically measured alcohol content Brewing refractometer; wine multiscale model
Specialist measurements The specific application, sample preparation and conversion DEF / urea solution; coffee; gem refractive index

Optical or digital?

An optical model uses a visible boundary against a scale. A digital model displays a calculated result. For either design, compare the required range, resolution, stated accuracy conditions, sample compatibility and reference-check method. A wider range alone does not make a meter better for your sample.

Understand the result before buying

On a sucrose-water sample, Brix represents sucrose concentration by mass. Other dissolved ingredients can change the interpretation. Fermented drinks, mixed fluids and specialist samples need the appropriate method rather than a generic conversion.

Use the guide to refractometer measurement scales to choose the result you need, then follow the reading guide for display and unit interpretation.
