Colorimeter
Choose a colorimeter around the sample area, optical geometry and comparison method used in your work. Color-difference readings are most useful when the reference, sample preparation and measurement conditions are consistent.
Compare two different measurement setups
| Model | Measuring aperture | Geometry | What to consider |
|---|---|---|---|
| CR2 portable color reader | 8 mm | D/8, SCI | Sample area, reference comparison and which functions need the app |
| LS175 colorimeter | 20 mm | 45/0 | Coverage of a larger sample area and repeatable positioning on textured materials |
A larger aperture samples a different area; it does not guarantee a correct reading on every curved surface. Check that the sample can cover the opening and be positioned according to the model's instructions.
Compare color results on the same basis
- Use the optical geometry required by your procedure.
- Specify the reference and color-difference formula before applying a pass/fail tolerance.
- Compare repeatability only with its documented measurement conditions; it is not the same as absolute accuracy.
- Check whether color libraries, averaging, storage and reports run on the instrument or require software.
A nearest color-library result helps narrow a selection. It does not prove that a paint formula or finished product will match under every viewing condition.
