HCN Gas Detectors: Choose the Channel, Range and Sampling Role
On this page
Quick answer: Choose an HCN gas detector by its installed hydrogen-cyanide channel, required range and documented sampling role. A multi-gas label does not establish HCN coverage, and a smelting product name does not establish suitability for every smelting atmosphere. Read the HCN-specific performance information before assigning a model to the job.
Confirm an HCN channel is actually installed
Start with the gas list on the exact supplied instrument. If a monitor lists CO, H2S, oxygen and combustible-gas channels, that list does not include an HCN measurement. A possible response from another channel is not a substitute for a documented HCN channel.
The single-gas versus multi-gas guide covers the broader format decision. For this purchase, the first question is narrower: which selected sensor measures HCN, and what does its documentation establish?
Also define the sample. An airborne HCN reading is not a measurement of dissolved cyanide in a process liquid. NIOSH's hydrogen cyanide entry lists skin absorption as well as inhalation among exposure routes, so an air monitor cannot account for every exposure route or serve as the complete protection program.
Read the current HCN options as separate configurations
Standard MH2000-HCN
The Standard pumped HCN detector uses an electrochemical sensor and offers 0–10, 0–50 or 0–100 ppm. One selected range is supplied. The internal pump draws a sample into the instrument; it does not establish that an arbitrary process stream or sampling accessory is compatible.
Smelting-specific MH2000-HCN
The separate smelting HCN configuration lists the same three spans but identifies a High Precision, interference-resistant sensor arrangement. The application configuration distinguishes it from the Standard listing, even when the selected upper range is identical.
That description does not provide a numerical interference table or approval for every gas mixture. Both listings state an instrument environment of −20°C to 50°C and 0–95% RH, non-condensing. These are not hot-process probe ratings. A smelting application still needs documented sample conditions, relevant interferents and any required hazardous-location approval.
OLED diffusion HCN option
The OLED single-gas family currently includes Hydrogen Cyanide, SKU GAS-NPLS-11. Its selected HCN row lists 0–50 ppm, a 0.1 ppm minimum reading and a maximum sensor response of 200 seconds. The fourteen-gas selector describes separate order choices, not fourteen installed channels.

The HCN-specific response row matters more than the page's general response statement of less than ten seconds. Do not use that generic figure to compare this HCN option with another detector. Request the response definition and test conditions, and reject a choice that cannot document the response required by the site's monitoring task.
Specify the response you need from the complete arrangement
A quoted sensor response is not automatically the time from a change at a remote sampling point to an actionable alarm. The collection point, sampling path and instrument behavior all belong in the requirement. Diffusion sampling and a pumped survey also observe different locations unless deliberately arranged otherwise.

The OSHA direct-reading instrument selection guidance calls for reviewing response, sensitivity, specificity, interference and environmental conditions in the instrument documentation. Use those questions to obtain HCN-specific evidence; general guidance cannot establish a particular model's performance.
A useful comparison therefore states the task first: continuous warning at a worker's location, a defined spot measurement, or a documented process-sample check. None of the product names above determines that role on its own.
Request an HCN-specific evidence card
Ask for one coherent set of documents for the selected model and range:
- The installed HCN sensor identity and performance at the concentrations relevant to the procedure.
- The response definition, test conditions and any complete-path timing requirement.
- Permitted sample conditions, accessories and relevant positive or negative interferences.
- The actual instrument approvals needed for the work area.
- Supported functional-check, calibration and service arrangements, including required consumables.
For interpreting mixture information, use the cross-sensitivity guide. Keep the answer tied to this HCN sensor rather than borrowing another brand's percentages or test-gas procedure.
Compare Mcooh's gas detector options against that evidence card. Include the exact HCN configuration, range and sampling role in the request so a familiar housing or broad product label does not become the basis of the purchase.
